Functional Behavior Assessment and Behavior Intervention Plan

A Functional Behavior Assessment is conducted to help determine why a child is engaging in specific undesired behaviors and what is gained from performing those behaviors. A Behavior Intervention Plan helps to replace the inappropriate behavior with a "replacement" behavior to provide a desired outcome, but in a more appropriate way.

To do a Functional Behavior Assessment and Behavior Intervention Plan the following will be completed:

  • Parental consultation to pinpoint concerns, define problematic behaviors, and identify skills they would like their child to increase
  • Interviews with parents and other caregivers
  • Observations in the natural environment
  • Analyzing collected data to determine factors maintaining the problem behavior
  • Identification of both short and long term goals
  • Development of a positive intervention plan that can be implemented by parents/caregivers
  • A written report documenting the Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) and Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP)
  • Identify method of data collection
  • An hour-long review of the FBA/BIP with parents or caregivers
